Türkiye AND Syria earthquake

More than 42,000 people have lost their lives and up to 7 million children have been impacted by a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Türkiye (formerly known as Turkey), Syria and other areas on the region. Just hours later, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the same area. The earthquakes have caused huge devastation and turned children’s lives upside down overnight.

Our teams in Syria and Türkiye are working directly and with partners to ensure children are getting the crucial support they need immediately. Over 57,000 buildings have collapsed or being damaged, including hospitals, schools and government buildings. 

We are delivering temporary shelters, blankets, clothing and other items to keep families warm. We’re also working with local authorities to help reunite unaccompanied children with their families or give them alternative care arrangements if needed. We’ve set up safe spaces for children to play, recover and regain a sense of normalcy.

We’re now also in a race against time to protect children and their families from facing a secondary humanitarian disaster, as a result of rising hunger, disease outbreaks and a total collapse of public services.

In Türkiye, we’re supporting children and their families in some of the worst affected provinces, such as Hatay /Gaziantep.  We are distributing the essentials to support families, including hot meals, water, tents, blankets, mattresses, diapers, sanitary products, heaters, firewood and warm clothing. We are also providing essential health services with our Emergency Heath Unit. And we are preparing to assist also with water and sanitation services.

In Syria, we are providing emergency food rations, blankets, tents and warm clothing, safe drinking water, and essential hygiene and sanitation items. Also hiring heavy machinery to remove the rubble and providing food to search and rescue teams and delivering fuel to two hospitals and to a local bakery which provides 7,500 bags of bread per day.

We’re planning to reach 1,600,000 people, including 675,000 children in total through our response.
